What is PDF Redaction?

PDF redaction is the process of permanently removing sensitive information from a PDF document so that it cannot be recovered. Unlike overlay redaction (drawing over content), true redaction removes the text or graphics from the PDF's underlying structure; the information cannot be recovered by copy-paste, OCR, or metadata analysis. This is critical for GDPR compliance, legal document preparation, court filings, and FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) requests.

PdfMetric's PDF Redaction tool permanently removes selected text or areas from your PDF. It replaces them with a black box or white area; the original data is deleted from the file. Because it is true redaction — not overlay — the redacted document is legally sound. All processing happens in your browser; documents are never uploaded to any server.

How Does Redaction Work?

True redaction involves three steps: (1) Content to be redacted is identified — text selection, rectangle area, or automatic pattern (e.g., SSN format). (2) The selected content is completely removed from the PDF's data stream; no mere visual overlay. (3) A new PDF is created; the old data cannot be recovered. In overlay redaction, the text remains in the PDF with only a visual cover; this is insufficient because the text can still be selected or uncovered.

Always create a backup before redacting; the process is irreversible. Carefully review the redacted document to ensure no sensitive information was missed.

When Should You Use It?

  • GDPR compliance: Permanently remove personal data so documents can be shared safely.
  • Court filings: Redact privacy-required information in public court documents.
  • FOIA requests: Government agencies respond to information requests with redacted documents.
  • M&A and legal due diligence: Redact competitor names, prices in documents shared with parties.
  • Health records: Redact patient names and diagnoses for HIPAA-compliant sharing.

Technical Details

True redaction: text/graphics operators are removed from the PDF content stream; replacement operators are added. Overlay: only a white/black rectangle is drawn; underlying text remains. PDF/A compliance can be preserved after redaction. AcroForm fields, annotations, and XMP metadata should also be redacted; otherwise information may leak.

Advantages

  • Permanent removal: True redaction; data cannot be recovered.
  • Legal reliability: Acceptable for court and FOIA use.
  • GDPR compliance: Satisfies requirements for erasure of personal data.
  • 100% privacy: Documents are processed in the browser and never uploaded.
  • Protects sensitive data: Names, IDs, credit cards, phone numbers permanently removed.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. True redaction is permanent. Original text cannot be recovered from a redacted PDF. Always create a backup first.

Overlay only visually covers; text remains in the PDF and can be copied. True redaction removes text from the file; recovery is impossible.

Open the redacted PDF and review all pages. Try selecting text; if it can be selected, redaction is incomplete. Also clean metadata.

How to Use

  1. Upload PDF: Load the PDF to be redacted.
  2. Mark areas: Select text or areas to redact (drag rectangle or text selection).
  3. Apply redaction: Click "Process" to apply permanent removal.
