PDF Trim Box
What is PDF Trim Box Adjustment?
PDF trim box adjustment is the modification of the page geometry that defines the final trimmed page size in professional printing. The PDF specification defines four page boxes: Media Box (raw paper), Crop Box (view), Bleed Box (bleed area), and Trim Box (post-trim size). PdfMetric's PDF Trim Box tool helps set these boxes correctly to ensure accurate cutting in professional print production.
The trim box defines the final page dimensions after cutting. Presses and cutting devices use trim box values as a reference for cutting pages at the correct position. The difference between trim box and bleed box is important: the bleed box includes the bleed area, while the trim box only defines the final page size the customer receives. Crop marks are positioned at trim box corners.
ISO Standard and PDF Page Geometry
ISO 15930 and PDF/X standards require page boxes to be correctly defined in print-ready PDFs. The media box defines the physical paper or raw area, the art box defines content boundaries, the crop box defines the viewable area. The trim box is the final size after printing and cutting. Professional print software uses the trim box to calculate cutting coordinates.
Incorrect or missing trim box settings lead to wrong cuts, content shifting, or bleed issues. Print shops typically prefer files where the trim box is the same as or correctly defined relative to the media box.
